Overall, I'm incredibly thankful that I decided to take Logic this semester. Yes, I needed it for my minor, but that's not the point. This class has really made me think about the way I frame my arguments. Even in everyday language, I'm pretty sure my conclusions don't always follow exactly from my premises. None-the-less, the course has challenged me to think this way.
Also, I really love the strength that comes from deductive logic. The ability to make an argument airtight that can't be proven wrong, based on the premises, is great. I only have one concern moving forward, and this is the question that I will ask you all.
Is formal deductive logic going to change the world? Probably not, right? Well, I'm wondering how we can use logic in the most effective way to posit beneficial change for the world.
Ideas?
I don't see formal deductive logic changing the world itself, but being used in a way to help solve problems that will build up over time to solve larger problems is definitely a possibility. Thinking logically alone outside of class, being able to apply what you've learned in a way that will actually help you, I think that's the very first step to finding a way to change the world, really.
ReplyDeletei'm happy I took this class as well. It was tough but i stuck with it. I felt like i learned a lot, and my writing and reading has definitely improved over the semester because of logic. I don't think formal deductive logic won't save the world one day but it is a possibility.
ReplyDeleteI agree, I do not foresee deductive logic changing the world. However, I do believe that it can benefit us. I think that logic is a natural and inherent aspect of our everyday lives, but it is very difficult for us to frame it in a way that we understand. With that being said, I believe that if more people are educated in this discipline, say in high school maybe, it would improve the way more people in the world think. Education is key, so maybe someday we can educate young people on logic, and it will not just be a college course.
